Early Life
Hathyogi Shree Nikam Guruji was born on 15th August 1917 at Village Mhasve, Tahsil Parola, District Jalgaon. Born in a humble family, his sharp intellect and perseverance shaped his journey. His mother’s knowledge of herbal medicines influenced him early. After losing his father in youth, he shouldered family responsibilities and, with education up to vernacular (7th standard), joined the police department in 1939 on merit.
Introduction to Yoga
Posted at Raver, he founded Ambika Vijay Gymnasium and taught Suryanamaskar, Mallakhamb, Lathikathi and Kushti. A young yogi named Bichhoo demonstrated Nauli and advanced processes, sparking Guruji’s deep curiosity. Unable to afford formal training, he embraced the scriptures as his guru, experimenting on himself and crafting an accessible preventive and curative course—the same foundation our institute follows today.
Achievements & Contributions
For Guruji, Hathayoga was not gymnastics but the sacred science of breath (Pranayama). Believing it to be invaluable, he taught free of charge. He authored works including Yogmanthansar and designed short and advanced courses in Pranayama, Bandha and Mudras. A blend of Karmayoga and Bhaktiyoga, he inspired many students to become teachers.
Teachings & Philosophy
He taught beyond caste, creed, religion or gender; empowering women to be fearless and capable. He held that realization of God arises through fraternity, benevolence, equanimity and good conduct—not empty ritual. Working selflessly with compassion, he exemplified humility and humanity.
Honors & Recognition
He led large Suryanamaskar drives and associated with leaders like Sane Guruji and Hegdewar. He served on security details for Chief Ministers, Prime Ministers and the President; appeared on Doordarshan’s Aarogya Sampada; and in 1995 received the international award “Gem of Alternative Medicine.” Notable milestones include: resolutions of 12-lakh Suryanamaskars; CKP Hall Thane 15 Aug 1978 programme with Vijay Merchant; Swagatadhyaksha at the 1982 Akhil Bhartiya Yog Sammelana; and honors on his 75th birthday in 1992.
Legacy
Guruji attained his final abode on 18th July 1999. His principles continue to guide Shree Ambika Yoga Niketan, carrying forward yoga as a path to physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing.
